Dr. Naikuni earned a BSc (Hons) degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nairobi, and also attended the Programme for Management Development at Harvard Business School. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science in Engineering by Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
Professional Qualifications
Before he joined Kenya Airways, Dr. Naikuni was Managing Director of both Magadi Soda Company and Magadi Railway, which were later acquired by Tata Chemicals in 2005. He joined Magadi Soda as a Trainee Engineer in 1979, and rose through the ranks to head the company.
Career History
In a career spanning over 34 years in local and international business, as well as in public service, Dr. Naikuni has presided over one of the most ambitious and successful expansion of an African airline, growing Kenya Airways from Sh27 billion in revenues in 2003 to Sh107 billion in 2012. During the same period the fleet increased from 17 to 37 aircraft and the number of destinations served expanded from 25 to 58.
Globally, his profile has continued to rise in the aviation industry with his appointment to the IATA Board of Governors and the President of AFRAA (African Airlines Association). He is currently serving as Deputy Chairman of Tata Chemicals Magadi and board member of Kenya Airways and its group of companies, Maersk Kenya, Lafarge International Advisory Board, East Africa Portland Cement Company, Precision Air Tanzania, Access Kenya, and a trustee of the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust. He recently served as the Chairman of the Police Reforms Implementation Committee which was appointed by Kenya’s President His Excellency Mwai Kibaki.
