Law & Politics

We all know the situation in Russia during the 90s, the oligarchs, the worthless ruble and the rampant corruption being committed by both Russian and foreign politicians. As the carcass of the former Soviet Union was being peck by numerous vultures, the wealth that the new Russia should have enjoyed was being funneled into ever fewer pockets, nouveau-riche oligarchs racing to become the latest billionaires. As the millennium came to an end, the Russian stage was set for either a complete meltdown or a miraculous salvation.Enter Putin.Capital flight was rampant, the ruble was worth nothing and the life of the average Russian was plummeting at an unsustainable rate whilst at the same time war was raging in Chechnya. One of the greatest difficulties facing the Kremlin at that time was the war in Chechnya. The Dubrovka Theater attack brought the Chechen issue into the headlines both in Russia and abroad, meaning that a solution had to be found. Putin described the fall of the USSR as “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the Twentieth Century”.
He might be small in stature, but he’s become huge on the world stage. Whoever succeeds him will be stepping into very large shoes indeed…

05-DEC-2016:: One common theme is a parabolic Putin rebound.
Law & Politics
At this moment, President Putin has Fortress Europe surrounded. The intellectual father of the new Zeitgeist that propelled Brexit, Le Pen, the Five Star movement in Italy, Gert Wilders in the Netherlands, is Vladimir Putin.

From feeding the hot-house conspiracy frenzy on line (‘’a constant state of destabilised perception’’), timely and judicious doses of Wikileaks leaks which drained Hillary’s bona fides and her turn-out and motivated Trump’s, what we have witnessed is something remarkable and noteworthy.

Putin has proven himself an information master, and his adversaries are his information victims.

5 OCT 15 :: Putin is a GeoPolitical GrandMaster
Law & Politics

Let us return to UNGA, where Putin set out his stall and I quote: ‘’I cannot help asking those who have caused the situation, do you realise now what you’ve done?’’

With hundreds of thousands of refugees entering Europe, his question was a sharp one.

Within 24 hours of delivering that speech, Russia instructed that the US should vacate Syrian Air Space.

This message was not delivered to Ashton Carter by his Russian counterpart Shoigu.

It was delivered to the US Embassy in Baghdad.

And pretty soon after that message was delivered, Russia began its intervention on the side of President Bashar Assad of Syria.

You could hear the squealing start immediately from Ankara to Riyadh, from the GCC to Washington.

All these capitals have assets on the ground in Syria, and what is clear is that Russia is not making a distinction between IS or the ‘’moderate opposition fighting Assad’’ [which really means ‘’our’’ terrorists].

Lavrov said: “If it looks like a terrorist, if it acts like a terrorist, if it walks like a terrorist, if it fights like a terrorist, it’s a terrorist, right?”

Putin fancies himself the fly-catcher and syria the fly-trap.

The speed of execution confirms that Russia is once again a geopolitical actor that will have to be considered. It is a breath-taking rebound.

"We have seen that previous attempts at totalitarian government were at most sub-totalitarian because there were no sufficient technologies to ensure the total tracking of people," Audrey Tang told reporters in Tokyo in an online news conference.

"Now in places like Xinjiang we are seeing a prototype of a truly totalitarian surveillance regime is being worked on."In a recent Nikkei interview, Tang said that putting Chinese equipment in a country's core telecom infrastructure is akin to inviting a Trojan horse into the network.Indeed, Taiwan has effectively excluded Huawei from its 5G network.
She describes herself as a "conservative anarchist," and continues to be so despite being in government.

"So I am at once digital minister, that's my day job. But I'm also moonlighting as a civic hacker," Tang said. "I see myself as a channel, as a bridge, as a Lagrangian point between civic movements on one side and government on the other."

China has unveiled a Digital Panopticon in Xinjiang where a combination of data from video surveillance, face and license plate recognition, mobile device locations, and official records to identify targets for detention.

Xinjiang is surely a precursor for how the CCCP will manage dissent.

The actions in Xinjiang are part of the regional authorities’ ongoing “strike-hard” campaign, and of Xi’s “stability maintenance” and “enduring peace” drive in the region.

Authorities say the campaign targets “terrorist elements,” but it is in practice far broader, and encompasses anyone suspected of political disloyalty.

Coronavirus-infected cells sprout filaments that may spread the virus Tiny projections may serve as highways to new cells to infect @ScienceNews
Misc.

Like a scene out of a sci-fi movie, cells invaded by the coronavirus can sprout probing appendages bedecked with viral bits.

Human cells infected with SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, formed more numerous and longer extremities, called filopodia, than uninfected cells, researchers report online June 28 in Cell.

High-resolution electron microscopy confirmed the presence of these filopodia in infected monkey cells and captured SARS-CoV-2 viral particles budding from the projections.

These protrusions may have unexplored roles in spreading the virus, and could serve as targets for future antiviral therapies.

Similar spindly projections are found on some healthy cells, where the structures serve different roles.

Repair cells, for example, send out filopodia to detect chemical cues to navigate to wound sites.

Other viruses, including the coronavirus behind the SARS epidemic, also can cause cells to sprout filopodia.

Some viruses, such as Marburg and Ebola, travel along filopodia of infected cells and may use the structures to move directly from one cell to another.

The extensions “are highways for transport,” says Robert Grosse, a cell biologist at the University of Freiburg in Germany.

―They fancied themselves free, wrote Camus, ―and no one will ever be free so long as there are pestilences.

―In this respect, our townsfolk were like everybody else, wrapped up in themselves; in other words, they were humanists: they disbelieved in pestilences.

A pestilence isn't a thing made to man's measure; therefore we tell ourselves that pestilence is a mere bogy of the mind, a bad dream that will pass away.

But it doesn't always pass away and, from one bad dream to another, it is men who pass away, and the humanists first of all, because they have taken no precautions.

Countries across Africa have recorded more than 850,000 infections and at least 18,000 deaths, according to an AFP tally as of Tuesday.

The continent's most industrialized economy has notched up more than 450,000 infections -- the highest number in Africa and the fifth biggest in the world.

The country also has more than 13,000 infected health workers, a record.

About 3,000 tests are carried per day on average in a country of around 200 million people -- just a tenth of the number conducted in South Africa which has about a quarter of the population.Kenya has seen cases triple to 17,975 in the past month.
Last week, Health Minister Ahmad Ahmad made an "urgent appeal" to development agencies -- his ministry is seeking oxygen bottles, face masks, gloves and medical blouses.

Ahmad was reprimanded by the government for taking what it called a "personal initiative" without consultation.

"That's why we are all not wearing face masks here. You think we don't fear dying? It's because there is no COVID-19," President John Magufuli declared on Monday.

Zimbabwe to resume stock trading, Old Mutual unit still suspended @ReutersAfrica
Africa

Zimbabwe’s stock market will resume trading next week after a state financial intelligence body concluded its investigation, but three stocks also listed on other exchanges, including the local unit of Old Mutual, will remain suspended, the finance minister said on Tuesday.

Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube said an investigation by the Financial Intelligence Unit revealed that there was a link between the movement in prices of three dual-listed stocks and the parallel market rate of the Zimbabwe currency.

But there was no evidence that the companies, Old Mutual, Pretoria Portland Cement and SeedCo International, were involved, Ncube said.

The three companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Ncube said trading on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange would resume on Aug. 3 but the three stocks would remain suspended “while further consultations continue on the best way forward regarding their re-listing under suitable rules”.

Stock market traders say the government is pushing to de-list the three companies and list them on a yet to be established U.S. dollar exchange in the resort town of Victoria Falls.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ruling ZANU-PF party has recommended the de-listing of Old Mutual.
